Demolition of Fannborg 2 completed and next steps

Construction work in the town center of Kópavogur continues. Below is a list of recent developments and what is next on the agenda.

  • The building at Fannborg 2 has been demolished. Work is now underway to crush the foundations and sort waste materials.

  • Following the sorting and removal of material, the foundation will be backfilled to create parking spaces, as planned in construction phase 2. These parking spaces are expected to be ready next week.

  • A row of parking spaces is being opened on the upper parking lot, as shown in the accompanying drawing. This is expected to be completed by the end of today, Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

  • The closed area on the lower level will also be reduced, opening up more parking spaces there.

  • To minimize dust dispersion, the contractor has used high-pressure water sprayers that create a mist over the demolition area, limiting dust that would otherwise drift over nearby buildings and vehicles.

  • Demolition permits have been applied for Fannborg 4 and 6, and these permits are expected to be issued next week. Once the permits are obtained, the demolition of those buildings will begin.

  • All additional parking spaces are scheduled to be ready next week.

Misters: These three images show high-pressure water sprayers blowing mist over the demolition area, thereby limiting dust that would otherwise have settled on nearby buildings and vehicles. In this way, the contractor limits inconvenience for the neighbors of the construction site.
