Kópavogur town centre is taking shape

The renewal of the town center is a long-term project in constant development. Older buildings that no longer meet modern requirements are giving way to community life and a human-friendly environment. The development builds on what is already there: people, culture, services, and the historical role of the town center. Development areas in the new town centre

The development of two plots, Fannborg and Traðarreitur, is beginning and is scheduled to be completed by 2030. Diverse housing and new public spaces will be built there. The development of these plots is part of the future development of Kópavogur town center, with the goal of strengthening the area as a vibrant community and cultural hub that plays an important role for the residents of Kópavogur. The local plan for the area took effect in 2021, and the draft building plans were approved by the town council in May 2025.

New homes, commercial spaces and high-quality public spaces are being developed in the town centre. A new central axis will connect new and existing residential areas with services, pedestrian routes and public transport.

Consultation team and information website launched

The Municipality of Kópavogur established a consultation and communications team to ensure information sharing and consultation with residents during the preparation and construction phases, in addition to launching an information website regarding the development of the town center. Open community meetings were held during the year, as well as specific meetings for residents of individual buildings and areas.

Demolition of older buildings

Construction formally began in March with the demolition of older buildings at Fannborg 2, 4, and 6. The demolition is scheduled to be completed in the first half of the year. Construction at the western Traðarreitur block formally began in August, with the demolition of the buildings there. Demolition at the Fannborg block was completed in the summer, followed by excavation work. Demolition at the western Traðarreitur block will be completed in the autumn of 2026.

What does the New Kópavogur Town Centre project involve?

The project encompasses the renewal and development of the town center and western district of Kópavogur. The goal is to create a vibrant and people-friendly town environment where housing, services, culture, and open spaces form a cohesive whole.

When will construction begin, and when is it expected to be completed?

The first phase of construction began in 2025. Development will take place in several phases until 2030, though progress may vary between areas.

Which areas are part of the project?

The main areas are Hamraborg, Fannborg, Traðareitur, and the adjacent areas by Fossvogur. These areas are linked together by new pedestrian paths, green spaces, and improved services.

Who is responsible for the project?

The development of the new town centre is in the hands of two private entities, Árkór and Jáverk, who are responsible for the project and construction in the area. The municipality of Kópavogsbær is involved in the process in its capacity as a local authority, with responsibility for planning, permitting, and coordinating information for residents and other stakeholders. A communication group is in operation, with representatives from the developers and Kópavogsbær, whose role is to ensure coordination, a holistic vision, and a good flow of information during the construction period.

Will the development have an impact on traffic and accessibility?

Yes, temporary closures and traffic disruptions may occur while construction is underway. All changes will be announced well in advance on the website and in the town's media. Access for emergency vehicles will be guaranteed throughout the construction period. The engineering firm Örugg is in charge of accessibility for the area, and individual plans will be introduced at each stage of the project.

When will blasting take place?

Blasting will begin once the slab over the parking garage has been demolished. This is scheduled to start in early summer 2026, once a permit has been issued. This blasting is expected to take about 4 months, after which there will be a break.Blasting will resume when excavation work begins on the Fannborg and Traðarreitur construction sites. There are different contractors for these two sites, but they have been asked to coordinate this work to minimise the duration of disruption.
