Unauthorized work at Fannborg 2 halted by building commissioner

On January 16, 2026, before a permit was issued for external demolition, Árkór ehf. undertook a limited demolition of a roof canopy on the exterior of Fannborg 2 to position a waste container as close to the building as possible. This was done to discharge materials from the upper floors of the building directly into the container, thereby facilitating material transport and shortening the overall project time. However, the demolition was halted by the building commissioner on the same day because the required demolition permits had not been granted. Representatives of Árkór ehf. issued a statement following media coverage, stating that there was no intention to demolish Fannborg 2 without a permit. No work had begun on the demolition of the building, as the necessary permits for it had not been granted. The building is owned by the company, and residential buildings are planned to be built on this plot. Árkór apologized for this oversight, and procedures and communication with contractors were reviewed to ensure that this does not happen again.

The demolition permit has now been issued, and work to demolish the building can begin.
